Some facts about Brain Tumors:
2. Oftentimes many people are walking around with a tumor and do not know because they don’t have symptoms until the tumor begins to enlarge.
3. In the US, 23,820 adults will be diagnosed with a cancerous tumor of the brain or spinal cord (10,410 women , 13,410 men).
4. Brain Tumors account for 85-90% of the central nervous system tumors.
5. Children under the age of 15 (3,720) will be diagnosed with a brain or central nervous system tumor this year.
6. Brain and central nervous system tumors are the 10th leading cause of death for men and women; approximately 17,760 adults die each year (9,910 males, 7,850 females).
How to take care of yourself - BE PROACTIVE!!! See your doctor or nurse practitioner if not feeling well!!
Symptoms you should watch for and if you are having them, see your doctor right away!
Headaches: Headaches can often be normal, but if they are persistent, or worsen when doing an activity – consult your MD right away.
Nausea or Vomiting: We all have this from time to time but if you are having it all the time or due to repeat headaches, seek medical consultation—children have this more than adults.
Seizures: These should not be ignored, and you need to see your doctor right away.
Visual Problems: It can be blurred vision, double vision, or loss of peripheral vision—sudden loss of vision is not normal – please contact your MD and eye doctor.
Memory Problems: You may notice you are having short term memory loss (this is usually affecting the temporal lobe area of the brain).
Weakness or strange sensation in one part of your body: Feeling like your being clumsy, or experience imbalance when walking (related to pressure in parietal lobe of brain causing coordination difficulties).
Speech difficulty: Unintentional slurring when speaking, or when speaking a sentence it will be spoken correctly but not make any sense.
